Capital Area Community Action Agency's Anti-Poverty Workshop
Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World is a research-based anti-poverty workshop developed by Dr. Ruby Payne and Phil DeVol, grounded in the concepts of Bridges Out of Poverty. This 15-week program is designed to help participants, known as Investigators, explore the impact of poverty on their lives and communities.
It offers a chance for individuals in poverty to reflect on their current situation and consider how they can change their circumstances. Investigators work in groups to discuss the causes of poverty and the resources needed to overcome it, developing clear goals and visions for the future. The program encourages participants to think beyond their limitations and envision a path to self-sufficiency.
The Getting Ahead program also focuses on the interaction between different economic classes—poor, middle class, and wealthy—and emphasizes the importance of collaboration for community improvement. After completing the course, participants enter the self-sufficiency program, which supports their education, job training, and placement. However, many individuals lack a support system, which is addressed through the Staying Ahead mentoring model.
This approach pairs participants with mentors from more resourced backgrounds to provide guidance and support during their journey out of poverty. Eligibility for the program includes a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, and classes are offered through Zoom, making it accessible for those looking to improve their lives.

Leon County Homeownership Development (HOD) Program
Leon County’s Housing Services Division supports organizations and builders in creating affordable housing units through their Homeownership Development (HOD) Program. This initiative assists income-eligible first-time homebuyers by significantly reducing the overall cost of homeownership through targeted financial support.
Key Features of the HOD Program:
- Funding for Construction: The program provides essential funding for the construction of housing units for builders to develop properties that meet community needs.
- Cost Reduction for Buyers: The HOD Program lowers the purchase price for eligible first-time homebuyers by subsidizing development costs.
- Eligible Costs Covered: Funding can be applied to critical expenses, including land acquisition, infrastructure development, necessary fees, and permits necessary for constructing homes.
Financial Details
- Maximum Award Amount: Up to $100,000 in funding is available to qualified builders and organizations.
- Loan Structure: The financial assistance is offered as a deferred forgivable loan, easing the burden of repayment.
This program not only promotes affordable housing but also helps to improve the overall well-being of the community. Potential homebuyers are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to make homeownership a reality.
